Ces mots ne se rapportent pas à la citation que l'apôtre vient de faire, mais à la grande pensée qu'il a développée, l'union de Christ et de son Eglise : c'est cette union qu'il appelle un grand mystère, et non le mariage. Qui le croirait ?

Parce que la Vulgate latine traduit partout le mot grec mystère par sacramentum, et parce qu'il a plu à quelques interprètes anciens de rapporter au mariage ce que Paul dit ici de l'union de Christ et de son Eglise, ce passage est devenu, aux yeux de l'Eglise romaine, une preuve sans réplique que le mariage est un sacrement, un grand sacrement !
