World English Bible Behold, the land of the Chaldeans. This people was not. The Assyrians founded it for those who dwell in the wilderness. They set up their towers. They overthrew its palaces. They made it a ruin.

Le texte hébreu de ce verset est obscur. Il nous paraît que le prophète y annonce la destruction de Ninive par les Chaldéens. Cet événement devait être pour Tyr le présage du sort qui l'attendait.

Ce peuple qui n'était pas. Cette expression, appliquée aux Chaldéens, est embarrassante ; car leur empire est plus ancien même que celui de Ninive. Elle s'explique sans doute par le fait qu'au temps d'Esaïe la Chaldée ne formait pas un empire indépendant ; elle était divisée en plusieurs Etats, la plupart vassaux de Ninive. Le prophète voit surgir une monarchie chaldéenne qui s'affranchit de la domination assyrienne et qui exécute enfin sur Ninive le jugement de Dieu. La tentative d'émancipation de Mérodac-Baladan, à l'époque d'Esaïe (chapitre 39 ; voir introduction), fut le prélude de cette renaissance de la puissance chaldéenne qui atteignit son apogée sous le règne de Nébucadnestar.

Assur, il (le peuple chaldéen) l'a livré aux bêtes du désert, littéralement : il l'a fondé pour les bêtes sauvages. Cette phrase pourrait avoir le sens directement opposé : Assur l'a livré (a livré les Chaldéens) aux bêtes du désert. Mais on ne saurait trop à quoi ces mots feraient allusion. Il est plus naturel de faire d'Assur l'objet et des Chaldéens le sujet de la phrase. Esaïe nomme ici le mystérieux ennemi dont il a menacé la Palestine au chapitre précédent (22.1-14) et qui, après avoir détruit Ninive frappera Tyr. Ninive fut prise en 606 par le Chaldéen Nabopolassar, allié au Mède Cyaxare ; elle devint dès lors, à la lettre, la demeure des bêtes du désert. Comparez Sophonie 2.13 et suivants.

Ils : les Chaldéens.

Ses palais : ceux de Ninive. Les Chaldéens, qui ont pu abattre Ninive, sauront bien aussi réduire Tyr, qui se vante de sa résistance victorieuse à Salmanasar.
