13 à 23 Le jugement qui détruit la terre elle-même et auquel les élus seuls survivent.

Il semble que tout ait été anéanti par le jugement qui vient de passer (versets 1 à 12). Il n'en est rien. La capitale du monde est détruite ; mais une partie des habitants de la terre subsiste, et parmi eux les fidèles israélites et les élus du monde païen, dispersés au milieu des peuples. Comparez l'image semblable 17.6.

Il y aura un « reste », parmi le peuple, préservé de la ruine générale : il sera dévot et pieux. Ces quelques personnes se trouveront dispersées, telles les glanures de l'olivier, cachées sous les feuilles.

Le Seigneur connaît tous ceux qui Lui appartiennent ; il n'en est pas ainsi du monde. Alors que l'hilarité des plaisirs charnels finit par cesser tôt ou tard, la joie des saints, quant à elle, reste immuable, toujours plus vivante, parce que l'action de la Grâce, véritable « fontaine » de leur réconfort spirituel, et fondement de leur espérance, ne cesse jamais.

Ceux qui se réjouissent dans le Seigneur, sont tout à fait capables de le faire également dans la tribulation ; par la foi, ils triomphent toujours, même alors que tous ceux qui les entourent sont dans l'angoisse et les larmes. Ces enfants de Dieu peuvent encourager ces derniers à faire de même. Ils sont capables de les relever, quand ils traversent de sombres vallées ou des endroits fâcheux.

Lors de chaque passage difficile, même le plus catastrophique, sachons garder notre regard fixé sur Dieu. Quand aucune tribulation ne nous touche, sachons rendre au Seigneur la gloire qui Lui revient !
