En ce qui concerne les enfants de Dieu, le but de l'affliction est de les séparer de toute pratique du péché. Les épreuves nous sont bénéfiques, quand elles nous poussent à garder une certaine distance par rapport au péché, et tenir ferme, face à la tentation.Jérusalem était défendue par la Grâce et la Protection divines ; mais quand Dieu s'est éloigné, la ville devint un véritable désert spirituel. Ce fut une étape terrible à franchir. C'est aussi une image du déplorable état de la vigne, (l'église), quand elle porte des raisins sauvages. Les pécheurs se flattent de ce qu'ils ne seront pas traités sévèrement par le ciel, Dieu, leur Créateur, étant compatissant ! Nous pouvons constater à quel point ces idées fausses n'auront guère de poids lors du Jugement !
