Ceci s'adresse à Ezéchias.

D'après les monuments assyriens, l'expédition de Sanchérib n'a pas duré plus d'un an ; cependant Esaïe parle de deux années de désolation pour la Palestine. C'est qu'en effet les Assyriens, arrivés au printemps ou en été (voir 29.1 et 32.10, notes), avaient tout enlevé ; il n'était resté aux Israélites, pendant la première année, que le grain tombé, c'est-à-dire demeuré sur le sol après la moisson faite par l'ennemi. En automne, la présence de celui-ci avait empêché toute culture ; les habitants de la campagne étaient d'ailleurs ou dispersés ou enfermés dans Jérusalem, et l'état du pays répondait aux descriptions prophétiques 7.21-25 ; 32.10-13 ; comparez 33.8-9. Vers la fin de cette première année, Eaïe déclare donc que l'année suivante encore il n'y aura pas de récolte et qu'on se nourrira de ce qui aura cru de soi-même. (Il est à remarquer que, dans les pays chauds, une seule semaille donne parfois deux et même trois récoltes.) Enfin, la troisième année tout pourra rentrer dans l'ordre habituel.

Ceci te servira de signe. Comment un fait futur peut-il garantir la délivrance actuelle de Jérusalem ? Cela ne se comprend pas très bien. Aussi ne faut-il pas presser trop le sens du mot signe. Comme souvent, il s'applique ici à un fait particulier et précis qui sert d'exemple, d'illustration à une promesse plus générale, et lui donne un caractère concret, saisissant pour l'imagination : elle devient par là plus accessible à la foi. Voyez Exode 3.12 un autre exemple de cette application du mot signe.
