Ezéchias s'était distingué par son zèle pour le service de Dieu et sa sévérité contre l'idolâtrie ; voir le témoignage qui lui est rendu 2Rois 18.3-7. Ce qu'il relève ici, c'est sa sincérité, sa droiture, dont il a conscience. David tient dans plusieurs psaumes un langage semblable. Les hommes de Dieu dans l'Ancien Testament, saisissant le péché moins profondément que ceux du Nouveau, en appellent souvent à leur fidélité à la loi de Dieu. Il est à remarquer que le droit dont ils se prévalent, résultant des promesses qui assurent à cette fidélité relative la bénédiction divine, est un droit créé en leur faveur par la grâce elle-même. Ezéchias semble vouloir rappeler à Dieu la promesse faite à Salomon 1Rois 9.4-5. Il était alors dans la force de l'âge (39 ans), mais sans héritier ; car Manassé, son fils et successeur (qui n'était âgé que de douze ans à son avènement au trône), n'était pas encore né (2Rois 21.1). Allait-il donc mourir sans postérité, lui qui avait marché, comme nul autre, sur les traces de son aïeul David ? On comprend ses larmes.
