Cyrus conquit les deux villes les plus riches de l'Asie, Sardes (la capitale de Crésus) et Babylone (la cité pleine d'or, Eschyle, Perses ; comparez Jérémie 51.13). Les trésors qu'il trouva à Sardes sont estimés par Pline à une somme qui équivaut à plus de 950 tonnes d'or.
