9.7 à 10.4 Le jugement de Samarie et du royaume d'Ephraïm. Ce discours a pour objet la ruine de Samarie et du royaume des dix tribus ; ruine dont Esaïe n'avait parlé jusqu'ici qu'incidemment et en relation avec la délivrance de Juda (7.16 ; 8.4). Il se résume dans le nom prophétique de Maherschalal-Chaschbaz (versets 3 et 4), comme celui du chapitre 8 dans le nom d'Emmanuel. L'idée du morceau est celle-ci : Le peuple d'Ephraïm a déjà été frappé, par la main de Dieu, et il s'imagine que le jugement est passé, mais ce n'en est encore que le, commencement, et les coups vont se répéter jusqu'au jour de la grande catastrophe, de l'exil, au-delà duquel le prophète fait pressentir que le jugement se prolongera encore. Ces châtiments sont mérités, car le peuple ne s'est point humilié après un premier jugement (versets 7 à 11) ; il est aveugle et perverti (versets 12 à 16) ; il est dévoré par le le feu de la discorde intérieure (versets 17 à 20) ; l'injustice envers les petits met le comble à son iniquité (10.1-4).

Quatre strophes, terminées par le même refrain, reproduction littérale du passage 5.25 ; ce qui dénote chez l'auteur l'intention de faire du jugement d'Ephraïm (chapitre 9) le pendant du jugement prononcé, chapitres 2 à 5, sur Israël en général et Juda en particulier.

Le morceau 7.1-9.6 était antérieur à l'expédition assyrienne contre Ephraïm et la Syrie ; le morceau 10.5-12.6 est postérieur a la prise de Samarie (10.9). Le discours 9.7-10.4 date du temps qui s'écoula entre l'expédition de Tiglath-Piléser et la ruine de Samarie (740-722). Voir 9.9 note.

7 à 11 L'orgueil d'Ephraïm ne s'est pas humilié sous la main qui le frappait.

Le Seigneur a envoyé une parole.La parole de Dieu est personnifiée, elle vient comme un messager du haut du ciel. (Reuss.) Cette parole est la prophétie même qui va suivre.

En Jacob, en Israël. La prophétie concerne le royaume des dix tribus (verset 8), mais c'est le peuple tout entier, Jacob même, qui est frappé dans l'un de ses membres, Ephraïm.
