Les Juifs talmudiques, prenant ce commandement au sens littéral, enferment certains passages de la Loi dans de petites boîtes ; celles-ci sont attachées à des lanières de cuir qu'ils portent autour du bras et sur le front : c'est ce qu'on appelle des thephillim ou phylactères. Dans Nombres 15.37-40 un commandement analogue paraît être pris au sens littéral ; il ne serait pas impossible qu'il en fût de même de Deutéronome 6.8 ; 11.18. Mais ici le sens paraît être celui-ci : Ce rite sacré doit être pour toi ce qu'est un signe sur la main ou un mémorial que l'on porte sur le front, c'est-à-dire un stimulant à penser sans cesse à la volonté de l'Eternel et à t'en entretenir avec les tiens. Comparez Proverbes 6.21 ; 7.2-3 ; Esaïe 49.16
