L'arche n'avait d'autre but que celui de renfermer et de conserver les tables de la loi ; de là son nom d'arche du témoignage (verset 22 ; 30.6, etc.). C'est pourquoi, au lieu de dire : devant l'arche, on dit parfois : devant le témoignage ; par exemple 30.36.
