Exode 33.19

Le Seigneur dit alors : « Je vais passer devant toi en te montrant toute ma bonté et en proclamant mon nom : “Le Seigneur”. J’aurai pitié de qui je veux avoir pitié et j’aurai compassion de qui je veux avoir compassion.
L'Éternel répondit : Je ferai passer devant toi toute ma bonté, et je proclamerai devant toi le nom de l'Éternel ; je fais grâce à qui je fais grâce, et miséricorde à qui je fais miséricorde.

L'exaucement.

Toute ma bonté. Cette expression n'équivaut pas à ta gloire (dans la bouche de Moïse). Des profondeurs inaccessibles de l'être divin, Dieu le ramène à ce qui constitue le fond de sa relation avec les hommes : sa bonté ; il lui en donnera une double manifestation sensible, pour la vue et pour l'ouïe.

Les derniers mots : J'accorderai ma grâce..., rappellent à Moïse qu'une pareille grâce est de la part de Dieu une libre faveur, que nul homme ne peut prétendre avoir méritée ; comparez Romains 9.15. On a entendu aussi : à toi, mais non au peuple ; ou : à toi, et même aussi au peuple.
