Cette défense est entièrement nouvelle. Le récit Nombres 25.1 et suivants montre combien le danger était réel.

Quand ils se prostituent... Ce mot est pris au sens moral et il désigne le péché de l'idolâtrie. Dieu, l'époux d'Israël, envisage l'adoration d'autres divinités comme un adultère de la part de son peuple. Cette expression rappelle en même temps l'étroite relation qu'il y avait entre tous ces cultes idolâtres et la pratique de l'impureté. Comparez Juges 3.6
