Le récit dit uniquement ce qu'entendit Moïse, car pendant que l'Eternel passait, il ne pouvait rien voir (33.22).

C'est Dieu qui proclame et qui est proclamé. L'objet de la proclamation est avant tout ce que Dieu avait annoncé à Moïse, sa bonté, qui compatit, pardonne et supporte, mais qui n'exclut pas la justice, qui poursuit le péché et punit le pécheur.
