Et vous saurez que je suis l'Éternel, quand je vous aurai fait entrer dans la terre d'Israël, dans le pays touchant lequel j'ai levé ma main de le donner à vos pères.
De votre côté, vous serez convaincus que je suis le Seigneur lorsque je vous conduirai dans le pays d’Israël, que j’avais solennellement promis de donner à vos ancêtres.
Et vous saurez que je suis l'Éternel, quand je vous ramènerai dans le pays d'Israël, dans le pays que j'avais juré de donner à vos pères.

Ezéchiel 1.1-33

Trois traits de la vie d'Israël rétabli à la fin des temps : la reconnaissance de la fidélité de Jéhova (verset 42) ; la connaissance et le dégoût de lui-même (verset 43) ; l'hommage rendu au nom de l'Eternel, pour l'honneur duquel la fidélité divine ne s'est pas lassée jusqu'à la fin. Ainsi c'est après être descendu au dernier degré de l'abaissement, à un état de captivité pire que la servitude d'Egypte, que l'histoire d'Israël recommencera tout de bon, repassant par les mêmes phases, que la première fois, mais phases d'une extension plus vaste et d'une nature plus spirituelle, par conséquent aussi d'une valeur plus décisive. Quel coup d'œil d'aigle que, celui qu'Ezéchiel jette ici sur la vie de son peuple ! Placé lui-même au moment où se termine la première partie de cette histoire et où va commencer la seconde, de ce point central il la contemple tout entière. Quand ce ne serait là qu'une vue, ce serait celle d'un homme de génie. Mais il y a plus : à cette intuition correspond une grandiose et glorieuse réalité ; c'est donc la vue d'un prophère. Il suffit en effet de jeter un regard sur l'histoire du peuple juif, pour y retrouver tous les traits du tableau tracé par Ezéchiel. Israël est sorti de sa captivité, mais non pour rentrer véritablement chez lui. Est-ce un chez-soi qu'une demeure dont un étranger est le propriétaire ? Israël est resté dès lors un peuple dépendant et son pays n'a plus été qu'une province de l'un des grands empires qui se sont succédé dans le monde des Gentils. Jusqu'à ce jour il habite au désert des peuples. Son existence est un état d'attente et de triage, comme le séjour au désert pour la génération sortie l'Egypte, les uns abandonnant les espérances nationales et le Dieu de leurs pères, les autres restant fidèles et maintenant leur regard sur l'avenir promis. Et la fin de cet état de choses ? Bien des circonstances paraissent en signaler dès aujourd'hui l'approche. Toutes les nationalités se reconstituent et réclament leur unité et leur patrimoine. Ne serait-il pas étrange que la plus tenace de toutes les races ne songeât pas à revendiquer l'une et l'autre ? Les 15 000 Israélites qui occupent à cette heure le sol de Jérusalem, ne sont sans doute que l'avant-garde du peuple, qui, ne pouvant ni retourner en Egypte, ni rester au désert, s'élancera enfin vers Canaan.
