Une chose aurait encore pu sauver le peuple ; c'est qu'il se trouvât dans son sein quelques hommes de bien, capables d'intercéder pour lui et qui fissent en quelque sorte de leur personne une cloison pour fermer la brèche par laquelle allait se précipiter le jugement. Ces intercesseurs, sortis spontanément du peuple, Dieu les a attendus et même appelés, demandés ; il n'a reçu aucune réponse. Mais, dira-t-on, Jérémie, Ezéchiel n'étaient-ils pas là ? Dieu ne parle pas ici de ses représentants, les prophètes. C'était du sein du peuple lui-même qu'il aurait voulu entendre s'élever le cri de supplication ; et précisément parce que rien de semblable ne se faisait entendre, il avait interdit aux prophètes d'intercéder encore pour ce peuple si complétement endurci et mûr pour le jugement ; comparez 14.12-21 ; Jérémie 7.16 ; 11.14 ; et pour l'image en général, 13.5,11 et suivants.
