6 à 8 Ces versets donnent une première explication de la parabole, mais tout en entremêlant les traits de l'image avec ceux de la réalité.

C'est pourquoi : Puisque c'est par cette image que je t'ai commandé de représenter le sort de Jérusalem.

La ville de sang. Nous avons déjà vu plusieurs fois, et dans Jérémie 22.3 ; Lamentations 4.13 et dans Ezéchiel 9.9 ; 23.45, etc., que dans les derniers temps les meurtres s'étaient multipliés à Jérusalem, jusque dans le temple, et restaient impunis : Le vert-de-gris, et non pas, comme on traduit ordinairement, la rouille, représente ce sang versé, qui n'a pas été nettoyé par la mort des malfaiteurs et par la pénitence de la ville entière ; il reste donc là sur la conscience des habitants, comme une couche de vert-de-gris attachée aux parois d'une chaudière.

Vide-la. Comme les morceaux jetés hors d'une chaudière empoisonnée, ainsi les habitants, massacrés ou exilés, seront jetés hors de ville.

Sans tirer au sort : car il n'y en aura aucun d'épargné. Il y a littéralement : au sort sur elle (la ville), pour : sur tout ce qu'elle contient.
