L'expression : les montagnes d'Israël, est sans doute inspirée au prophète par le contraste douloureux entre le beau pays de ses souvenirs et de ses affections et ces plaines immenses de la Babylonie qu'il a maintenant sous les yeux. Mais ces montagnes de la Terre Sainte, qu'en avaient fait les Israélites ? Des hauts lieux, foyers d'idolâtrie dès le temps de Salomon (1Rois 11.7).

Le peuple aurait dû détruire les autels dressés sur les hauts lieux ; ce qu'il n'avait pas fait, Dieu va l'exécuter ; comparez 5.7-8.
