World English Bible that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Grec : "Devint pour les païens en Jésus-Christ, afin que nous reçussions la promesse de l'Esprit." Par la mort expiatoire de Christ, la bénédiction promise à Abraham a pu s'étendre aux païens, à tous les peuples.

Puis, dans le second membre de la phrase, l'apôtre parle à la première personne nous, et marque ainsi que les Juifs aussi ont part à cette bénédiction qui est le fruit du sacrifice de Golgotha. Le mur de séparation qui, par la loi, s'élevait infranchissable entre Juifs et païens est tombé : "Christ est notre paix." (Ephésiens 2.14-18)

- L'apôtre insiste sur cette bénédiction d'Abraham à laquelle nous avons part par le sacrifice de Christ et par la foi ; il la désigne comme la promesse de l'Esprit.

Recevoir la promesse, c'est en obtenir la réalisation. (Hébreux 10.36 ; Luc 24.48 ; Actes 1.4) Or le bien immense qui était promis, c'était l'effusion de l'Esprit de Dieu, après que l'œuvre de la rédemption serait accomplie. (Esaïe 44.3 ; Jérémie 31.33 ; Ezéchiel 36.27 ; œ ; 2.28-32)

Et comme cet Esprit est reçu par la foi, et non par la loi, l'apôtre rentre ainsi dans son premier argument, (verset 2) et prépare celui qui va suivre, également tiré de l'alliance de Dieu avec Abraham.
