Genèse 10.22

Les cinq fils de Sem.

L'énumération va du Sud au Nord, puis de l'Est à l'Ouest. En effet, un coup d'œil jeté sur la carte nous montre les tribus sémitiques établies comme en demi-cercle autour de la plaine de Babylone : à l'Est, Elam ; au Nord, Assur et Arpacsad ; au Nord-Ouest, Lud ; à l'Ouest, Aram, au Sud, les Jotkanides.

Elam. Voir Jérémie 49.3, note. Ce mot dérive du verbe ala, monter, et signifie haut pays. Ce nom, comme tant d'autres, a donc passé du pays au peuple, puis du peuple à l'ancêtre. Dans les inscriptions assyriennes, cette contrée s'appelle Ilamtou.

Arpacsad. Un vestige de ce mot parait se trouver dans le nom d'Arrapachitis, que les Grecs donnaient à une contrée située sur le versant méridional de l'Arménie et arrosée par le Zab, qui sejette dans le Tigre près de Ninive. Plusieurs savants ont aussi été frappés de la grande ressemblance qui existe entre la fin du mot (csad) et le mot Casdim (Chaldéens), et ont cru pouvoir traduire Arpacsad par forteresse ou haut pays ou encore territoire des Chaldéens.

Cette étymologie coïncide avec le rapport de Josèphe, qui fait d'Arpacsad le père des Chaldéens. Or nous trouvons les Chaldéens établis au temps d'Abraham près de l'embouchure de l'Euphrate (voir à 11.28). Il faut donc admettre, si cette étymologie est fondée, que ce peuple, établi d'abord sur le versant sud de l'Arménie, a émigré vers le Sud et est arrivé jusque dans la Babylonie méridionale.

Lud ne doit pas être confondu avec les Ludim, peuple égyptien mentionné au verset 43 et dont il est plusieurs fois question dans l'Ancien Testament. Ce nom désigne ici les Lydiens qui, au temps des Grecs, occupaient la partie occidentale de l'Asie-Mineure.

De nombreux traits communs à leurs traditions et à celles des Assyriens et des Babyloniens prouvent leur origine sémitique : d'après Hérodote, par exemple, leur premier roi était, fils de Ninus et petit-fils de Bel, héros mythiques de la vallée de l'Euphrate. Il est probable qu'au moment de la composition de notre chapitre, les Lydiens s'étendaient à l'Est jusqu'à Assur et Arpacsad, car jusqu'ici nous n'avons constaté l'existence d'aucun peuple dans la partie méridionale de l'Asie-Mineure.

Aram signifie probablement haut pays ; mais ce nom perdit de bonne heure son sens étymologique et servit à désigner une race considérable qui occupait tout le territoire compris entre la Méditerranée à l'Ouest, le pays de Canaan et le désert syrien au Sud, le Tigre à l'Est et la chaîne du Taurus au Nord.

L'Ancien Testament connaît plusieurs pays de ce nom : ainsi les expressions Aram-Naharaïm (Aram des deux fleuves, Genèse 25.10) et Paddan-Aram (champ ou plaine d'Aram, Genèse 25.20 ; 28.2, etc.) servent à désigner la Mésopotamie ; ailleurs il est question d'Aram de Damas (2Samuel 8.6), d'Aram de Beth-Rehob et d'Aram de Tsoba (2Samuel 10.6), trois royaumes syriens en relation avec les Israélites.

Cependant. le mot Aram est le plus souvent employé seul et désigne alors la Syrie proprement dite, ou Aram de Damas, au nord de la Palestine. La langue araméenne, très voisine de l'hébreu, était comprise aussi bien des Assyriens et des Babyloniens que des Israélites et était la langue internationale de l'Orient. Comparez Esaïe 26.11 ; Esdras 4.7 ; Daniel 2.4, note.

L'auteur n'indique pas les descendants d'Elam, d'Assur et de Lud, et se borne à ceux d'Arpacsad et d'Aram, qui ont une importance particulière dans l'histoire qui suivra.

      8 The king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar) went out; and they set the battle in array against them in the valley of Siddim;
      9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five.
