Sera retranché de son peuple : non pas banni ou mis à mort ensuite d'un décret de l'autorité, mais exclu des promesses attachées à l'observation de l'alliance.

On ne peut envisager ce morceau comme un second récit du même fait qui a été raconté au chapitre 15. L'ordonnance de la circoncision distingue absolument les deux récits. Comme Dieu a répété plusieurs fois la promesse, en accentuant à chaque fois quelque trait nouveau, ainsi l'alliance a été également renouvelée à plus d'une reprise pour y introduire quelque élément spécial. Le rédacteur de la Genèse nous a conservé les divers récits que les auteurs des documents avaient reproduits chacun en vue de son but particulier.
