Tomba la face contre terre. A l'ouïe de cette révélation, Abraham adore de nouveau.

Et il rit. Ce rire n'est pas celui de l'incrédulité ou de la moquerie ; il provient de l'étonnement dont il est saisi à la vue du contraste entre la grandeur. de la promesse et l'infirmité de ceux qui en sont les objets.

Abraham, Sara, Ismaël rient chacun à leur tour sous l'empire de sentiments divers, la surprise, le doute, la moquerie. Isaac mérite donc bien son nom : Il a ri ou : On a ri à son occasion.
