23 à 27. Abraham circoncit toute sa maison.

En ce jour même : il ne tarde pas à exécuter l'ordre de Dieu.

Abraham et toute sa famille ont été circoncis ; le patriarche afficha ainsi le signe de son alliance avec Dieu, se distinguant des autres familles qui n'avaient pas part à la communion divine. Ce fut l'objet d'une obéissance implicite ; il a accompli ce que Dieu lui avait demandé de faire, sans chercher à savoir le « pourquoi » ni le « comment ». Il a exécuté cet acte qui était vraiment désiré par Dieu. Abraham a obéi rapidement, sur le champ. Une obéissance sincère ne souffre pas de délais. Non seulement les doctrines qui nous sont révélées, mais aussi les signes de l'alliance divine nous rappellent que nous sommes fautifs et pollués par le péché. Ces révélations nous montrent notre besoin d'être rachetés par le sang ; elles nous conduisent au Sauveur qui a été promis dès les temps anciens, et nous enseignent à s'appuyer sur Lui par la foi.

La Parole nous montre que sans la régénération, la sanctification par l'Esprit et l'abandon de notre vieil homme charnel, nous ne pouvons bénéficier de l'alliance divine. Mais rappelons-nous bien que la véritable circoncision est celle du cœur, par le moyen de l'Esprit, Romains 2:28,29.

À la fois sous l'ancienne alliance et sous la nouvelle, beaucoup, hélas, ont témoigné de manière visible qu'ils n'étaient pas véritablement scellés du Saint-Esprit.
