World English Bible Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Joseph into Egypt.

Marchands madianites. Ces marchands sont appelés dans ce même verset et ailleurs Ismaélites. On a pensé que les chameliers appartenaient à l'une des tribus et les marchands à l'autre. Mais les marchands, ceux qui vendent Joseph, sont appelés indifféremment Madianites et Ismaélites (comparez 37.36 avec 29.1). Il faut donc admettre soit que le début du verset 28 et le verset 36 appartiennent à un autre document, soit que le mot Ismaélites désigne d'une manière générale tous les habitants du désert, parmi lesquels étaient les Madianites. Cette seconde explication est confirmée par Juges 8.24 où il est dit des Madianites qu'ils étaient Ismaélites.

Vingt pièces d'argent, probablement sicles. Ce fut plus tard, d'après la loi, le prix d'un esclave de cinq à vingt ans (Lévitique 17.5).

L'emmenèrent en Egypte. Les anciens papyrus et les monuments nous montrent que, dès la plus haute antiquité, on avait des foules d'esclaves en Egypte et que les plus appréciés étaient ceux du pays de Canaan et des contrées voisines. Le mot qui servait à désigner les esclaves au temps de Ramsès II était même un mot sémitique, abata, en hébreu ébed, serviteur. Le commerce, d'esclaves se fait encore aujourd'hui de la même manière dans ces contrées.
