Offrit des sacrifices. Au moment de quitter le pays de la promesse, il sent le besoin d'offrir encore une fois son culte au Dieu que ses pères avaient adoré en ce même lieu (21.33 ; 36.25), de s'assurer de son approbation avant, de consommer ce pas décisif pour l'avenir de sa famille, et de resserrer ainsi le lien de l'alliance qui garantit à ses descendants la possession future de ce pays.

Dieu parla à Israël. La période patriarcale s'était ouverte par l'apparition de Dieu à Abraham lui ordonnant d'aller en Canaan ; elle se clôt maintenant par l'ordre donné à Jacob de quitter pour un temps ce pays.

Dans des visions de nuit : dans une vision telle que sont les visions de nuit. Le pluriel caractérise le genre, le mode de révélation.

Même si les événements et les projets qui nous entourent semblent se dérouler pour le mieux, nous devrions toujours rechercher le conseil, l'aide, et la bénédiction du Seigneur. Tout en observant Ses ordonnances, et en recevant les bénédictions qu'Il nous a promises, recherchons Sa présence, et la paix qu'Elle confère. Dans tous nos faits et gestes, nous devrions nous rappeler que nous ne sommes que de passage en ce monde. Quand nous passons par la « vallée de l'ombre de la mort », ne craignons aucun mal ; rien ne peut mieux nous encourager, que la présence de Christ.
