Tu as les yeux trop purs pour voir le mal, et tu ne saurais prendre plaisir à regarder le mal, qu'on [fait à autrui. ] Pourquoi regarderais-tu les perfides, et te tairais-tu quand le méchant dévore son prochain qui est plus juste que lui ?

World English Bible You who have purer eyes than to see evil, and who cannot look on perversity, why do you tolerate those who deal treacherously, and keep silent when the wicked swallows up the man who is more righteous than he,

Malgré cette attente de la foi, la conduite actuelle de Dieu paraît, cependant contradictoire à sa sainteté ; comment peut-il se servir ainsi du bras des méchants ? C'est cette objection que le prophète présente à l'Eternel dans les paroles suivantes.

Un plus juste que lui. Ces hommes, plus justes que les Chaldéens qui les dévorent, ne sont pas le peuple juif dans son ensemble, car les versets 2 et 3 ont décrit son état de corruption : ce sont les fidèles en Israël qui, enveloppés dans la catastrophe générale, doivent souffrir en même temps que les impies.
