Ce qui suit (versets 5 à 11) est la réponse (le l'Eternel : elle est adressée au peuple entier.

Regardez... soyez étonnés... Ce qui doit exciter l'étonnement des auditeurs du prophète, c'est l'apparition subite des Chaldéens, peuple dépendant de l'Assyrie à cette époque, et le rôle qu'ils vont jouer, comme agents de l'Eternel, dans le châtiment et la destruction du royaume de Juda. Ce châtiment surpassera en sévérité, tout ce que ce peuple pensait avoir à redouter. De là la citation de saint Paul (Actes 13.41) qui applique ces paroles au rejet des Juifs.
