World English Bible By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went.

Genèse 12.1 et suivants

Ici encore, l'auteur a soin de faire remarquer que l'objet de la foi d'Abraham ne se voyait point, Dieu, dans la vocation du patriarche, n'ayant pas voulu même lui nommer le pays où il devait aller ; et que la foi produit l'obéissance ou plutôt est elle-même l'obéissance, la soumission du cœur et de la volonté à la Parole de Dieu. (Comparer Jean 3.36 ; note.)

Il obéit en partant ou comme on peut traduire l'infinitif grec qui sert de complément au verbe : il obéit, il partit par obéissance.

Nous sommes souvent appelés à détacher nos liens qui nous lient au monde, à perdre nos intérêts et nos commodités d’ici-bas. Si nous sommes les « héritiers de la foi d'Abraham », nous obéirons et irons de l'avant, bien que nous ne sachions pas ce qui nous attend ; nous emprunterons alors le chemin du devoir, espérant fermement l'accomplissement des promesses de Dieu.

L'épreuve de la foi d'Abraham consistait simplement à obéir totalement à l'appel de Dieu. Sara reçut la « promesse » comme étant celle de Dieu ; étant ainsi convaincue, elle estima avec assurance que non seulement, ce Dernier pouvait, exécuter cette promesse, mais qu’Il le ferait.

Beaucoup de personnes, auxquelles Dieu a fait des promesses, ne reçoivent pas immédiatement ce qui leur a été promis. La foi peut faire patienter, en vue de bénédictions lointaines, comme les voir s’accomplir très rapidement ; elle peut se réjouir en ces bénédictions, bien que nous soyons « qu'étrangers » ici-bas : la demeure des saints (ou des pèlerins) se trouve en effet dans le ciel ! Par la foi, ces derniers sont vainqueurs sur l’anxiété que peut provoquer la mort, ils sont prêts à dire « au revoir » à ce monde, à toutes ses plaisir comme à toutes ses souffrances.

Les coupables qui ont été jadis véritablement sauvés et appelés vers le Royaume céleste, n'ont aucunement l'envie de revenir en ce monde. Tous les croyants authentiques aspirent à l'héritage céleste ; plus leur foi est déterminée, plus ils sont fervents de cœur ! Malgré les dégâts qu’ont pu occasionner leurs péchés, et la pauvreté de leur condition spirituelle, Dieu n'a pas honte d'être appelé LEUR Dieu ; telle est Sa Miséricorde et Son Amour envers eux. Que les rachetés n'aient jamais honte d'être appelés Son peuple, ni de faire partie de ceux qui sont tant méprisés ici-bas ! Par dessus tout, qu'ils veillent à ce qu'ils ne soient l’objet d’aucune honte ni d’aucun reproche envers leur Dieu.

L'épreuve et l'acte de foi les plus grands, cités dans la Parole, se retrouvent dans l'offrande qu'a faite Abraham, avec son fils Isaac, Ge 22:2. Dans ce texte, chaque terme retrace une épreuve.

Notre devoir consiste à distinguer et à dissiper nos doutes éventuels et nos craintes, en regardant, comme l’a fait Abraham, à la Toute-puissance divine. La meilleure façon d’apprécier tout ce que nous possédons est de tout remettre à Dieu ; Il continuera alors à nous octroyer ce qu’il y a de meilleur.

Considérons quelle a été notre obéissance à Dieu, lorsque qu’Il nous a appelés à des actes de bien moindre envergure que ceux qui sont cités dans ce texte. Avons-nous abandonné tout ce que nous avions, totalement persuadés que le Seigneur compenserait toutes nos pertes, et nous bénirait par Ses dispensations, même celles qui pourraient nous paraître les plus affligeantes ?
