Chapitre 13.

1 à 16 Fidélité dans la conduite et dans la profession de la foi.

Grec : demeure, sous-entendu : parmi vous. (Comparer Hébreux 10.24 ; Romains 12.10 ; 1Thessaloniciens 4.9 ; 1Pierre 1.22 ; 2Pierre 1.7)

- Les Eglises de la Palestine s'étaient, dès le commencement, distinguées par leur amour fraternel ; (Actes 2.45-47 ; 4.32-37) peut-être cet amour s'était-il refroidi, et était-ce là un signe de la rechute que l'auteur voudrait prévenir. (Matthieu 24.12, note.)

- Les versets Hébreux 13.2,3 signalent spécialement deux occasions où devait s'exercer cet amour des frères.

Le dessein de Christ, en se livrant Lui-même pour nous, à la croix, a été de racheter les pécheurs, en vue de constituer un « peuple particulier », zélé pour les bonnes œuvres.

La véritable piété provoque un lien d’amitié fraternelle, le plus intense qui soit.

Nous trouvons dans ce texte de sérieuses exhortations, relatives à différents devoirs chrétiens, avec en particulier, celle du contentement. Plusieurs péchés s’opposent à cela : la cupidité, désir inassouvi de gagner de l’argent ici-bas, et la jalousie envers ceux qui en ont beaucoup plus que nous. Possédant des trésors spirituels dans le ciel, nous pouvons nous contenter du « moindre » ici-bas, ce que nous accorde en fait le Seigneur.

Ceux qui n’obéissent pas à cette exhortation, restent sans cesse en quête de possession, bien que Dieu ait parfois élevé leur condition en ce monde.

Adam, dans le jardin d’Éden, a connu le paradis, mais cependant, par son péché, n’était pas satisfait d’une telle situation ; certains anges dans le ciel restèrent également dans l’insatisfaction ; l'apôtre Paul, quant à lui, bien qu'humilié et dépouillé, a appris à tout moment, en tous points, à vivre dans le contentement.

Les chrétiens doivent se satisfaire de leur sort présent et s’appuyer avec foi sur les promesses divines : « je ne te délaisserai point, je ne t'abandonnerai point. » Jos 1:5.

Dans le texte original, il ne se trouve pas moins de cinq négations rassemblées pour confirmer cette promesse : le véritable croyant bénéficiera de la présence de Dieu, pleine de Grâce, durant sa vie, à l’aube de sa mort, et pour l’éternité ! Les hommes ne peuvent nuire à Dieu ; ce Dernier contrôle tout ce qu’ils font envers Son peuple élu, en bien ou en mal !
