Ces termes : ils avaient toutes choses communes, ils vendaient leurs possessions (biens immeubles) et leurs biens (objets mobiliers), ont donné l'idée d'une vraie et complète communauté des biens.

La plupart des interprètes cependant voient dans ces versets non la description d'une rigoureuse organisation sociale, mais le tableau du premier élan d'une ardente charité, qui portait les chrétiens à mettre à la disposition de leurs frères pauvres tous les biens qu'exigeaient leurs nécessités. (Comparer Actes 4.34,35)

En effet,

1° cette mise en commun des biens, si elle eut lieu, ne se vit jamais qu'à Jérusalem, dans les premiers temps de l'Eglise, sous l'action de l'Esprit de la Pentecôte ; l'histoire n'en a pas conservé de trace dans aucune autre Eglise, où, bien souvent, les apôtres durent exhorter les chrétiens riches à la bienfaisance. 2° Il n'y eut jamais, même à Jérusalem, aucune institution légale à cet égard, mais tout ce détachement des biens terrestres fut l'effet spontané de l'amour, joint peut-être à l'idée du retour prochain de Christ.

3° Tous les chrétiens restaient donc parfaitement libres de conserver leurs biens, (Actes 5.4) et nous voyons en effet Marie, mère de Marc, en possession de sa maison. (Actes 12.12)

Aussi quand le communisme moderne s'est appuyé de ce récit, il a confondu une ardente charité avec son esprit niveleur.

Mais ce qu'implique ce trait de la vie chrétienne aux premiers jours de l'Eglise, c'est la condamnation de l'avarice des riches qui prétendent porter le nom de chrétiens.
