L'auteur, qui a demandé les prières de ses frères, prie lui-même pour eux, et dans ce vœu, si riche en pensées chrétiennes, il jette un dernier regard sur son épître entière, demandant à Dieu d'en appliquer à ses lecteurs les saintes vérités.

Il s'adresse au Dieu de la paix qui est la source de la paix, qui la donné volontiers, c'est par ce nom que Paul aime à désigner Dieu. (Romains 15.33 ; 16.20 ; Philippiens 4.9 ; 1Thessaloniciens 5.23)

Notre auteur ajoute que ce Dieu a ramené d'entre les morts notre Seigneur Jésus, couronnant par là l'œuvre du Sauveur. C'est la première fois que la résurrection de Jésus Christ est mentionnée dans notre épître, mais elle est supposée dans la description de l'entrée de Christ, souverain sacrificateur de la nouvelle Alliance, dans les lieux saints, auprès de Dieu.

L'auteur désigne le Sauveur par ces termes remarquables : le grand Pasteur des brebis, pour le placer bien au-dessus de tous les "conducteurs" (Hébreux 13.17) qui dépendent de lui et ne sont que ses serviteurs. Il rappelle que Jésus mérite seul ce titre, parce qu'il a versé son sang pour ses brebis, (Jean 10.11) et que ce sang a scellé une alliance (Hébreux 9.15,24) qui est éternelle, par opposition à l'Alliance mosaïque qui avait vieilli et qui allait être abolie. (Hébreux 8.13)

Appuyé sur ces vérités, ou plutôt sur ces faits divins, il exprime son vœu pour ses frères : c'est que ce Dieu de la paix (grec) les forme complètement à toute bonne œuvre pour faire sa volonté. (1Pierre 5.10)

Mais comment parviendront-ils à cette perfection qui est selon la volonté divine ; ? L'auteur sait que Dieu les y amènera lui-même : faisant pour lui-même en nous ce qui lui est agréable, car c'est Dieu qui accomplit en nous tout ce qu'il nous commande. (Ephésiens 2.10 ; Philippiens 2.13)

- Le mot : pour lui-même se lit dans Sin., A, C, et doit être maintenu ; il a été omis dans quelques documents, parce qu'on n'en comprenait pas le sens.

- A, C, versions, portent : en vous, c'est probablement une correction amenée par le vous de la phrase précédente.

- Enfin, cette parfaite sanctification ne peut s'opérer que par Jésus Christ vivant et agissant en nous ; elle n'a pas pour but notre glorification, mais sa gloire éternelle qui subsistera aux siècles des siècles.

- Tout l'Evangile et toute la vie chrétienne se trouvent résumés dans ce vœu.
