En effet, il ne s’agit dans un tel culte que de prescriptions purement extérieures concernant des aliments, des boissons et diverses ablutions : rien que des rites matériels réglant la vie du corps. Ils devaient seulement rester en vigueur jusqu’au temps où Dieu réformerait toutes choses et instituerait un ordre nouveau.

Notre version suppose admise la leçon de Sin., B. A. D autres interprètes, en adoptant le même texte, traduisent : "qui s'ajoutent seulement en tant qu'ordonnances charnelles aux aliments, aux breuvages et aux diverses ablutions."

- Les dons et sacrifices sont appelés ordonnances (grec) de la chair, parce qu'ils conféraient a l'Israélite une justice extérieure, selon l'homme naturel, en faisant de lui un membre du peuple de l'alliance, mais qu'ils ne pouvaient le délivrer effectivement du péché qui entachait et accablait sa conscience. (Hébreux 9.9)

- Les aliments et breuvages ne sont pas seulement les repas sacrés, (Hébreux 13.9 et suivants) et en particulier le repas pascal, mais tous les aliments et breuvages sur lesquels portaient les prescriptions de la loi. (Lévitique 11 Nombres 6.3 ; comparez Colossiens 2.16)

Ces prescriptions ne devaient être imposées que jusqu'à un temps de réformation (grec de redressement, mot qui ne se trouve qu'ici dans le Nouveau Testament), un temps où les ordonnances imparfaites de l'ancienne Alliance seraient rendues parfaites. (Jean 4.23 et suivants)
