Interpellation énergique semblable à celle de Jacques 4.13. L'auteur s'attaque maintenant aux riches, pour lesquels il a déjà eu des paroles d'avertissement et de désapprobation ; (Jacques 1.10 ; 2.2-7) ici il leur dénonce les jugements de Dieu sur les criantes injustices dont ils se rendent coupables et sur leur vie de jouissances. Les termes qu'il emploie montrent clairement qu'il a en vue des hommes qui n'appartenaient pas à l'Eglise de Jésus-Christ. (Voir l'Introduction et comparez Jacques 2.6,7, note.)
En vain objecte-t-on qu'il ne saurait utilement s'adresser à des gens qui ne liraient pas son épître. Il est tout à fait dans le style des prophètes (Esaïe 33.1 ; comparez Matthieu 23.13) d'apostropher les absents.
D'ailleurs, en annonçant, dans ce langage plein d'énergie, les châtiments de Dieu qui allaient tomber sur les riches mondains, oppresseurs des pauvres, il voulait non seulement offrir à ces derniers le consolant espoir d'une prochaine délivrance, (verset 7 et suivants) mais présenter aux membres de l'Eglise qui n'étaient pas dépourvus de biens et pouvaient être tentés par là même d'imiter les riches de ce siècle, un sévère avertissement, propre à les préserver de l'orgueil, de l'injustice et de l'amour du monde.
Ces avertissements sont, du reste, aussi nécessaires à faire entendre aujourd'hui qu'au temps où ils furent écrits.
Pour le cœur de l'homme, il y a dans l'or et l'argent des pièges du démon, dont une sincère pureté ne parvient pas toujours à préserver ceux-là mêmes qui savent le mieux qu'ils ne doivent pas y attacher leur cœur.
Grec : Sur vos malheurs qui viennent...au jour prochain du jugement éternel, et plus tôt encore, à la ruine de Jérusalem et du peuple juif. La parousie (verset 7) était rattachée à la ruine de Jérusalem dans l'attente des premiers chrétiens.
Les jugements de Dieu annoncés contre les riches et les non-croyants. (Jacques 5:1-6)
Les désordres publics, provenant des revendications et des souffrances de ceux qui sont exploités, sont très durs à supporter par la bourgeoisie, surtout quand elle se croit en sécurité...Exhortation à la patience et à la douceur devant les tribulations. (Jacques 5:7-11)
Avertissements contre les serments irréfléchis ; la prière recommandée dans les moments d'affliction comme dans les circonstances prospères ; les chrétiens doivent confesser leurs fautes mutuellement. (Jacques 5:12-18)
Le bonheur d'être à l’origine de la conversion d'un pécheur. (Jacques 5:19,20)
Tous les trésors idolâtres de ce monde, tant vénérés, périront inexorablement.
Veillons à discerner toute escroquerie ou oppression ; évitons de sombrer dans de tels péchés. Dieu ne nous défend pas de profiter des plaisirs légitimes ; mais ne vivre que pour le plaisir, et particulièrement le plaisir coupable, est un péché.
Quel tort peuvent avoir les oppressés, de ne pas désirer s’inquiéter de leur âme, alors qu’ils souffrent corporellement ? Le juste peut être condamné et tué ; mais quand il souffre par la faute de ses oppresseurs, Dieu le remarque et agit.
En plus de tous leurs crimes, les Juifs ont condamné et crucifié un « Juste », Celui qui est venu parmi eux, Jésus-Christ le vertueux !
