Ces mêmes pharisiens, avec les principaux sacrificateurs convoquent une séance du sanhédrin (grec un sanhédrin ; c'est ici la seule fois que Jean emploie ce mot), pour délibérer sur l'événement qu'on vient de leur dénoncer et qui était de nature à grandir démesurément l'influence redoutée de Jésus sur le peuple.
Il faut remarquer ce verbe au présent : que faisons-nous ? Il est urgent de faire quelque chose et de le faire tout de suite.
Ce qui les remplit d'inquiétude c'est que cet homme (terme de mépris) fait beaucoup de miracles.
Ce n'est donc pas seulement la résurrection de Lazare qui les trouble, celle-ci n'a fait que mettre le comble à ces manifestations de la puissance divine qui agissait par Jésus et que les chefs du peuple ne peuvent tolérer. Ils croient ces miracles, ils les constatent officiellement, et ils veulent condamner celui qui les opère !
De toute évidence, les paroles prophétiques de ce souverain sacrificateur ne manifestaient pas une abondance de Grâce en son cœur. Quand nous cherchons à fuir la calamité en pratiquant le péché, nous ne faisons en réalité qu’attirer cette dernière sur notre tête ; il en est de même pour ceux qui pensent qu’en s'opposant au Royaume de Christ, leurs intérêts ici-bas ne pourront que croître : le sort réservé aux méchants les atteindra inexorablement...
Lorsque les âmes se convertissent à Christ, elles se rassemblent spirituellement autour de Lui ; Il est leur Souverain et leur Refuge, Il est mort dans ce but ! Par cette mort, Il a racheté ces âmes pour Lui-même, pour leur octroyer ensuite le Saint-Esprit ; en cet Amour manifesté à la croix, les croyants sont alors étroitement unis !
