18 :28 à 19 :16 Jésus devant Pilate.

Israël a rejeté et condamné à mort son Messie, son Sauveur, et, comme depuis que ce peuple est sous la domination romaine, il a perdu le droit d'exécuter des sentences capitales, (verset 31) il a la honte de le livrer à l'autorité païenne alors représentée par Pilate.

Le prétoire (Matthieu 27.27) était à Rome le lieu où le prêteur rendait la justice. Dans les provinces, on appelait de ce nom le palais du gouverneur. A Jérusalem, c'était, selon les uns, l'ancien palais d'Hérode dans la partie occidentale de la ville haute ; selon d'autres, un édifice attenant à la citadelle Antonia, où logeait la garnison romaine, à l'angle nord-ouest du temple. Bien que le Gouverneur résidât à Césarée, il venait à Jérusalem durant les grandes fêtes, afin de prévenir les troubles qui s'y produisaient souvent.

- C'était le matin, car la nuit s'était écoulée d'abord chez Anne, puis devant le sanhédrin, où Jésus venait d'être condamné à mort. Pilate, sans doute prévenu dès la veille, consentit à donner cette audience matinale. (Comparer sur ce procès devant Pilate Matthieu 27.11-30,Marc 15.1-20 ; Luc 23.1-25, notes.)

Dans le récit qu'il fait de celle-ci, Jean est plus complet que les synoptiques, et il a seul conservé plusieurs traits d'une grande importance.

M. Godet résume ces transactions dans les termes suivants : "Les Juifs demandent à Pilate de confirmer sans examen leur sentence. (verset 30) Celui-ci s'y refuse : c'est la première phase des négociations : versets 38-32. Alors ils articulent une accusation politique : il s'est fait roi. Pilate juge cette accusation non fondée ; puis il fait deux tentatives infructueuses pour délivrer Jésus avec l'appui du peuple, c'est la seconde phase : verset 33 à 19 : 6. Les Juifs avancent alors un grief religieux : Il s'est fait Fils de Dieu. A l'ouïe de cette accusation, Pilate s'efforce de plus en plus de délivrer Jésus, c'est la troisième phase : versets 7-12. A ce moment, les Juifs voyant leur proie prête à leur échapper, mettent de côté toute pudeur et emploient le moyen odieux de l'intimidation personnelle pour faire plier la conscience du juge. Sur cette voie, ils se laissent entraîner jusqu'au reniement de leur plus chère espérance, celle du Messie : ils s'inféodent à César ; c'est la quatrième phase : versets 12-16."

Les chefs du peuple, qui venaient livrer Jésus à Pilate, refusent d'entrer dans le prétoire, afin de ne pas se souiller. Effrayante hypocrisie dans ces ministres de la religion, qui, la haine au cœur, vont commettre le plus odieux des crimes et se font scrupule d'entrer dans une maison païenne où il y avait du levain !

- C'est ici le passage principal de notre évangile sur lequel se fondent les interprètes qui admettent que Jean, contrairement aux synoptiques, place la mort de Jésus au 14 Nisan. (Voir Jean 13.1, note.)

Nous voyons, en effet, les Juifs craindre de se souiller et de ne pouvoir manger la Pâque.

Cette expression manger la Pâque signifie ordinairement manger l'agneau pascal.

Ceux qui pensent que nous sommes au 15 Nisan s'efforcent d'étendre cette expression à la célébration de la fête tout entière. Mais les passages cités (Deutéronome 16.2,3 ; 2Chroniques 30.22 ; 35.7-9) sont peu concluants.

Il était injuste de mettre à mort Celui qui avait fait tant de bien ; en conséquence, les Juifs désiraient se mettre à l'abri de tout reproche.

Beaucoup craignent davantage le scandale qui peut suivre une mauvaise action, que cette dernière. Christ avait annoncé qu'Il serait livré aux Païens, et que ceux-ci Le mettraient à mort ; Ses paroles se sont accomplies. Il avait dit qu'Il devait être crucifié, pour ressusciter ensuite. Si les Juifs l'avaient jugé selon leur loi, Il aurait été lapidé ; la crucifixion n'a jamais été utilisée auparavant parmi les Juifs.

Il est déterminé pour chacun de nous, de quel type de mort nous allons finir, bien que cela ne nous soit pas dévoilé ; ceci ne doit pas nous inquiéter. Seigneur, que notre « heure » arrive quand et comment Tu l'as déterminée.
