Portant lui-même sa croix !

Jean seul nous a conservé ce trait émouvant qui était resté gravé dans son souvenir de témoin oculaire. Chez les Romains l'usage voulait que le condamné portât sa croix ou du moins, suivant certains auteurs, la pièce transversale, qui formait les bras de la croix, le montant de celle ci étant planté d'avance sur le lieu de l'exécution.

Jésus fut soumis à cette humiliation profonde, jusqu'au moment où, le voyant épuisé et succombant sous l'instrument de son supplice, on en chargea Simon de Cyrène. (Comparer Matthieu 27.32, note.)

C'est ici qu'il faut méditer avec recueillement la parole de Jésus Matthieu 10.38.
