Plus Thomas avait opposé de résistance à la foi en Jésus ressuscité et glorifié, plus il est pénétré de la lumière divine qui inonde son âme.

La toute science, la charité du Sauveur le saisissent, l'humilient. Dans cet instant, toutes les déclarations de Jésus sur sa divinité Qui n'avaient pu vaincre les doutes de Thomas, lui deviennent autant de traits de lumière et, après avoir été le dernier à croire la résurrection du Sauveur, il est le premier à l'appeler d'un nom qu'aucun autre peut-être n'avait encore prononcé : Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu !

Dans l'original, l'article précède chacun de ces deux noms et les distingue l'un de l'autre ; puis ce mot : mon, deux fois répété, donne encore plus d'intimité et d'amour à ce cri de la foi et de l'adoration, qui s'élève du fond de l'âme de Thomas.

- Toutes les tentatives de l'exégèse rationaliste pour expliquer ces paroles comme si elles étaient une exclamation de surprise ou d'action de grâce adressée à Dieu, à cause du miracle de la résurrection, tombent en présence de ces mots : Thomas répondit et LUI dit.

C'est donc bien Jésus en qui ce disciple, devenu croyant, reconnaît son Seigneur et son Dieu.

Et Jésus, loin de repousser cet hommage comme un acte d'idolâtrie l'approuve. (verset 29)

Ainsi, le récit de Jean nous montre les disciples arrivant graduellement à la foi en cette grande vérité que son évangile était destiné à prouver : la Parole était Dieu. (Jean 1.1)
