Jésus insiste, et il veut maintenant faire sentir à Nicodème qu'il y a en lui et dans ses pareils (vous), non seulement de l'ignorance, mais de l'incrédulité.

En effet, non seulement ils n'ont point pénétré dans le sens profond des Ecritures qui les auraient éclairés, mais voici un témoignage, rendu avec la plus entière certitude (ce que nous savons), reposant sur une intuition immédiate de la vérité divine (ce que nous avons vu), un témoignage affirmé dans les termes les plus solennels (en vérité, en vérité), et ce témoignage, ils ne le reçoivent point. (Comparer Jean 3.32 ; 1.11)

Ils montrent ainsi qu'ils sont animés de l'incrédulité qui repousse les choses divines. Il s'agit moins, en effet, de comprendre celles-ci par l'intelligence que de les recevoir dans le cœur, c'est-à-dire de les croire.

- Reste une question que les interprètes ont résolue de manières diverses. De qui parle Jésus en employant ce pluriel nous : nous savons, nous disons, nous avons vu, nous témoignons ?

Quelques-uns (Luthardt, Weiss) ont pensé que Jésus associe à son propre témoignage celui de Jean-Baptiste, plusieurs fois rappelé dans les premiers chapitres ne notre évangile, et qu'il reprocherait ainsi aux pharisiens de ne l'avoir pas reçu. Luther, Bèze, Tholuck pensent que Jésus veut dire : Moi et tous les prophètes, Bengel : Moi et le Saint Esprit ; Chrysostome : Moi dans mon unité avec Dieu. D'autres, n'ont vu dans ce nous qu'un pluriel de majesté ; mais cette forme de langage ne se retrouve pas dans la bouche du Sauveur.

M. Godet, avec Lange, Hengstenberg, M. Westcott, admet qu'il s'agit des disciples de Jésus, "dont un où plusieurs se trouvaient en ce moment auprès de lui et qui commençaient déjà à devenir les organes de ce doctorat nouveau inauguré par lui. En la personne de Jésus puis dans ses actes et ses paroles, le ciel est constamment ouvert sous leurs yeux ; (Jean 1.51) déjà ils voient et savent véritablement...Sur ce fondement, déjà ils témoignent."

"Quelle vivacité, quelle fraîcheur dans la déclaration de Jean et d'André, (Jean 1.42) dans celle de Philippe, (Jean 1.47) dans l'exclamation de Nathanaël... ! (Jean 1.50) Jésus ne se sent donc plus seul. De là le sentiment de joie profonde qui respire dans ces pluriels : nous disons, nous savons, et qui se trahit jusque dans la forme du langage."
