Mais à qui l'applique-t-il ?

Les uns répondent : A luimême ; il n'a aucune prétention à avoir ou à être rien de plus que ce qui lui a été départi. (Bengel, Lücke, Hengstenberg, Godet.)

D'autres, à Jésus ; il n'aurait pas les succès dont les disciples de Jean étaient jaloux, si ceux-ci ne lui avaient été donnés du ciel. (De Wette Meyer, Astié, Weiss, Holtzmann.) D'autres enfin, à Jean et à Jésus tout ensemble, chacun d'eux devant remplir la mission qui lui a été assignée de Dieu. (Tholuck, Luthardt, Keil.)

Il nous semble que la première de ces explications est le plus en harmonie avec le verset 28 où Jean continue à parler de lui-même et de ce qui ne lui a pas été donné.
