Ces innocents mis à mort sont les prophètes qui ont été tués sans cependant avoir été surpris en flagrant délit d'effraction ; il faut comparer ici la loi Exode 22.1. Ces paroles rappellent celles du verset 30 ; comparez l'histoire de Manassé (2Rois 21.16).

Mais... pour toutes ces choses ; passage difficile ; il faut sous-entendre : à cause des censures dont les péchés du peuple étaient l'objet de la part des prophètes. Leur fidélité fut la seule cause de leur mort. On sent dans ces mots une émotion contenue ; Jérémie n'ignore pas qu'en parlant ainsi à ces meurtriers, il joue sa propre vie.
