Veillé sur elles. Ce mot signifie proprement : faire la revue du troupeau pourvoir s'il y manque quelque pièce. Mais il peut se prendre aussi en mauvaise part, dans le sens de visiter pour punir. Ce double sens rendait possible le jeu de mots que nous avons cherché à rendre dans ces deux propositions : Vous n'avez pas veillé sur elles ; je vais veiller sur vous. En d'autres termes : Vous avez oublié les brebis que vous deviez paître ; je n'oublierai pas, moi, ces mauvais pasteurs au jour du jugement.
