Vingt-trois années de prédication

The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (the same was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon),

which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying:

From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, these twenty-three years, the word of Yahweh has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; but you have not listened.
4
Yahweh has sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them (but you have not listened, nor inclined your ear to hear)
5
saying, Return now everyone from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that Yahweh has given to you and to your fathers, from of old and even forevermore;
6
and don't go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and don't provoke me to anger with the work of your hands; and I will do you no harm.
7
Yet you have not listened to me, says Yahweh; that you may provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own hurt.
8
Therefore thus says Yahweh of Armies: Because you have not heard my words,
9
behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, says Yahweh, and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations around; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.
10
Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.
11
This whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
12
It shall happen, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, says Yahweh, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate forever.
13
I will bring on that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.
14
For many nations and great kings shall make bondservants of them, even of them; and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the work of their hands.
La coupe du jugement
15
For thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, to me: take this cup of the wine of wrath at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send you, to drink it.
16
They shall drink, and reel back and forth, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
17
Then took I the cup at Yahweh's hand, and made all the nations to drink, to whom Yahweh had sent me:
18
Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and its kings, and its princes, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and a curse, as it is this day;
19
Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;
20
and all the mixed people, and all the kings of the land of the Uz, and all the kings of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;
21
Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon;
22
and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the isle which is beyond the sea;
23
Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all who have the corners of their beard cut off;
24
and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed people who dwell in the wilderness;
25
and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes;
26
and all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another; and all the kingdoms of the world, which are on the surface of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.
27
You shall tell them, Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Drink, and be drunk, vomit, fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.
28
It shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at your hand to drink, then you shall tell them, Thus says Yahweh of Armies: You shall surely drink.
29
For, behold, I begin to work evil at the city which is called by my name; and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth, says Yahweh of Armies.
30
Therefore prophesy you against them all these words, and tell them, Yahweh will roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he will mightily roar against his fold; he will give a shout, as those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31
A noise shall come even to the end of the earth; for Yahweh has a controversy with the nations; he will enter into judgment with all flesh: as for the wicked, he will give them to the sword, says Yahweh.
32
Thus says Yahweh of Armies, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great storm shall be raised up from the uttermost parts of the earth.
33
The slain of Yahweh shall be at that day from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.
34
Wail, you shepherds, and cry; and wallow in dust, you principal of the flock; for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are fully come, and you shall fall like a goodly vessel.
35
The shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape.
36
A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and the wailing of the principal of the flock! for Yahweh lays waste their pasture.
37
The peaceable folds are brought to silence because of the fierce anger of Yahweh.
38
He has left his covert, as the lion; for their land has become an astonishment because of the fierceness of the oppression, and because of his fierce anger.
Vingt-trois années de prédication

Voici la parole adressée à Jérémie au sujet de toute la population de Juda, la quatrième année du règne de Jojakim, fils de Josias, sur Juda, qui était aussi la première année de règne de Nebucadnetsar sur Babylone.

Le prophète Jérémie la proclama à tous les habitants de Jérusalem et elle concernait toute la population de Juda.

« Depuis la treizième année du règne de Josias, fils d'Amon, sur Juda et jusqu’à aujourd’hui, il y a 23 ans que la parole de l'Eternel m’est adressée. Je vous ai parlé et reparlé, inlassablement, mais vous n'avez pas écouté.

L'Eternel vous a envoyé tous ses serviteurs, les prophètes. Il les a envoyés, inlassablement, mais vous n'avez pas écouté, vous n'avez pas tendu l'oreille pour écouter.
5
Ils disaient : ‘Que chacun renonce donc à sa mauvaise conduite et à la méchanceté de ses agissements ! Ainsi vous pourrez habiter sur la terre que l’Eternel vous a donnée, à vous et à vos ancêtres, depuis toujours et pour toujours.
6
Ne suivez pas d'autres dieux pour les servir et pour vous prosterner devant eux, ne m'irritez pas par votre manière d’agir, et je ne vous ferai aucun mal.’
7
Mais vous ne m'avez pas écouté, déclare l'Eternel, de sorte que vous m’avez irrité par votre manière d’agir, et ce pour votre malheur.
8
» C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l’Eternel, le maître de l’univers : Puisque vous n'avez pas écouté mes paroles,
9
je vais prendre et envoyer tous les peuples du nord, déclare l'Eternel, ainsi que mon serviteur Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone ; je vais les faire venir contre ce pays, contre ses habitants et contre toutes les nations qui l’entourent. Je vais les vouer à la destruction et faire d’eux un sujet de consternation et de moquerie ; il n’en restera que des ruines, et ce pour toujours.

Je ferai disparaître de chez eux les cris de réjouissance et de joie, les chants du fiancé et de la fiancée, le bruit de la meule et la lumière de la lampe.
11
Tout ce pays deviendra une ruine, un endroit dévasté, et ces nations seront esclaves du roi de Babylone pendant 70 ans.
12
» Cependant, lorsque ces 70 ans seront passés, j’interviendrai contre le roi de Babylone et contre son peuple à cause de leurs fautes, déclare l'Eternel, j’interviendrai contre le pays des Babyloniens et j'en ferai un désert pour toujours.
13
Je ferai venir sur ce pays tout ce que j'ai annoncé sur lui, tout ce qui est écrit dans ce livre, ce que Jérémie a prophétisé sur toutes les nations.
14
En effet, des nations puissantes et de grands rois feront d’eux aussi leurs esclaves et je les traiterai conformément à leurs actes et à leur manière d’agir. »
La coupe du jugement
15
Oui, voici ce que m’a dit l’Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël : « Prends dans ma main cette coupe, remplie du vin de ma colère, et donne-la à boire à toutes les nations vers lesquelles je vais t’envoyer.
16
Elles boiront, elles tituberont et elles perdront la tête devant l'épée que j’envoie parmi elles. »
17
J’ai pris la coupe de la main de l'Eternel et je l’ai donnée à boire à toutes les nations vers lesquelles il m’avait envoyé :
18
à Jérusalem et aux villes de Juda, à ses rois et à ses chefs, pour en faire des ruines, un sujet de consternation, de moquerie et de malédiction, comme on peut le constater aujourd'hui ;
19
au pharaon, roi d'Egypte, à ses serviteurs, ses chefs et tout son peuple ;
20
aux peuples de toutes sortes, à tous les rois du pays d'Uts, à tous ceux du pays des Philistins, à Askalon, à Gaza, à Ekron et à ce qui reste d'Asdod ;
21
aux Edomites, aux Moabites et aux Ammonites ;
22
à tous les rois de Tyr, à tous ceux de Sidon et à ceux de la côte située de l'autre côté de la mer ;
23
à Dedan, à Théma, à Buz et à tous ceux qui se rasent les coins de la barbe ;
24
à tous les rois d'Arabie et à tous ceux des populations diverses qui habitent le désert ;
25
à tous les rois de Zimri, à tous ceux d'Elam et à tous ceux de Médie ;
26
à tous les rois du nord, qu’ils soient près ou loin, les uns après les autres, et à tous les royaumes du monde qui vivent à la surface de la terre. Enfin, le roi de Shéshac a dû boire après eux.
27
L’Eternel m’a ordonné : « Annonce-leur : ‘Voici ce que dit l’Eternel, le maître de l’univers, le Dieu d'Israël : Buvez, enivrez-vous, vomissez et tombez sans plus vous relever devant l'épée que j’envoie parmi vous !’
28
Et s'ils refusent de prendre la coupe de ta main pour la boire, dis-leur : ‘Voici ce que dit l’Eternel, le maître de l’univers : Vous en boirez, c’est certain !
29
En effet, je commence à propager le malheur dans la ville à laquelle mon nom est associé, et vous, vous resteriez impunis ? Vous ne resterez pas impunis, car j’appelle l'épée sur tous les habitants de la terre, déclare l'Eternel, le maître de l’univers.’
30
» Quant à toi, tu leur transmettras toutes ces prophéties et tu leur diras : ‘L'Eternel rugit d'en haut, de son saint refuge il fait retentir sa voix. Il rugit contre son domaine, il répond à tous les habitants de la terre d’un cri semblable à celui des hommes qui écrasent le raisin.

Ce tapage se propage jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre, parce que l'Eternel est en conflit avec les nations. Il poursuit toute créature en justice, il livre les méchants à l'épée’, déclare l'Eternel.
32
» Voici ce que dit l’Eternel, le maître de l’univers : Le malheur se propage de nation en nation et une grande tempête se lève depuis les extrémités de la terre.
33
Ce jour-là, ceux que l’Eternel aura tués seront étendus d'un bout à l'autre de la terre. Ils ne seront ni pleurés, ni ramassés, ni enterrés : ils seront pareils à du fumier sur la terre. »

Hurlez, bergers, criez ! Et vous, les puissants du troupeau, roulez-vous dans la cendre ! En effet, le moment où vous allez être massacrés est arrivé. Je vous briserai et vous tomberez comme un vase précieux.
35
Plus de refuge pour les bergers ! Plus d’échappatoire pour les puissants du troupeau !
36
On entend les cris des bergers, les hurlements des puissants du troupeau, car l'Eternel dévaste leur pâturage.
37
Les plaines prospères sont réduites au silence à cause de la colère ardente de l'Eternel.
38
Il a abandonné son refuge comme un jeune lion sa tanière. Oui, leur pays n’est plus que dévastation à cause de la fureur du destructeur, à cause de son ardente colère.

Le jugement qui va se promener sur toutes les nations de la terre, est annoncé sous la figure, fréquemment usitée, d'une coupe. Cette coupe doit être présentée par Jérémie à chacun des peuples nommés ici. Comme le contenu de la coupe est la colère de Dieu, il est clair que l'acte lui-même ne se passe point dans le domaine de la réalité extérieure. Dans cette énumération de peuples, le prophète commence par Juda et par Pharaon, son allié, et de là remonte au nord, en s'écartant tantôt à droite, tantôt à gauche, pour finir par Babylone. Cette prophétie est le thème général des menaces contre les peuples païens développées dans la dernière partie du livre (chapitres 46 à 51). C'est là sans doute la raison pour laquelle la traduction des LXX a placé ces dernières ici même.
Ce texte nous présente, par ce genre d'image, la désolation qui doit survenir en cette partie du monde : Nebucadnetsar, qui venait tout juste de commencer à régner, allait être l'objet de la fureur divine, par l'épée destructrice. Les désolations que cette dernière devait opérer dans tous ces royaumes, sont représentées par les effets dévastateurs de l'excès de boisson.
Ceci devrait nous inciter à détester le péché de l'ivresse, avec ses conséquences affligeantes. L'ébriété prive en effet les hommes de leur raison, elle les rend fous. Elle leur ôte le capital que représente leur santé ; à ce péché, correspond un châtiment particulier.
Ce texte nous invite également à redouter les jugements célestes, matérialisés par la guerre : cette peur peut amener un peuple à une complète confusion.
Les nations citées dans ce texte refuseront de prendre la « coupe de la main » du prophète : elles ne croiront pas Jérémie ; ce dernier devait cependant leur annoncer la Parole de l'Éternel : il était complètement insensé d'essayer de vouloir lutter contre le Tout-Puissant !
Si les jugements divins commencent par sévir envers les faux docteurs, le méchant ne peut espérer aucune échappatoire.
