Le prophète désigne ici les diverses catégories de devins qui se trouvaient chez les peuples auxquels il s'adresse. Les inscriptions assyriennes et babyloniennes prouvent que les souverains d'Orient ne faisaient rien sans consulter les dieux. Ezéchiel nous montre, Ezéchiel 21.26, Nébucadnetsar consultant deux sortes de présages pour savoir s'il doit se diriger sur Jérusalem ou sur la capitale des Ammonites.
