1 à 6 Les Ammonites

Les Ammonites descendaient de Lot, comme les Moabites. Ils avaient possédé primitivement le territoire situé entre le pays de Moab, au sud, et le Jabbok, au nord. Ils en avaient été dépouillés, peu avant l'arrivée des Israélites, par Sihon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui les avait repoussés à l'orient, vers le désert. Ce fut alors que Moïse fit la conquête du royaume de Sihon et le donna en partage aux tribus de Gad et de Manassé (Nombres 21.21 et suivants ; 32.1 et suivants). Aussi dès ce moment les Ammonites regardèrent-ils toujours les Israélites de mauvais œil, et ne négligèrent-ils aucune occasion de leur nuire et de s'agrandir à leurs dépens ; comparez Juges 3.13 ; 10.7-9 ; 11.12-32 ; 1Samuel 11.1-11 ; 2Samuel 10.1-11.1 ; 2Chroniques 20.1-28 ; 2Chroniques 27.5. Après la déportation des tribus demeurant au delà du Jourdain par Tiglath-Piléser (2Rois 15.29), les Ammonites réoccupèrent le territoire de la tribu de Gad, comme si Israël restait sans héritiers (verset 1). Leur arrogance leur valut les menaces du prophète Sophonie (Sophonie 2.8-11). Enfin, de concert avec les Moabites, ils s'unirent aux troupes de Nébucadnetsar pour marcher contre Jéhojakim.

S'inspirant d'une prophétie antérieure d'Amos (Amos 1.13-15), Jérémie prédit ici aux Ammonites un châtiment correspondant à leur offense. Il décrit d'abord le crime d'Ammon, verset 1 ; puis son châtiment, versets 2 à 5 ; enfin son rétablissement, verset 6.

Leur Roi : en hébreu Malcam, ce mot est destiné à rappeler le nom de Milcom ou Malcom (Molech, Moloch), le dieu suprême des Ammonites, qui est censé inspirer tous les actes de ce peuple et qui est la personnification de son esprit national, comme Camos celle de l'esprit des Moabites (48.16). Les mots son peuple, en hébreu Ammo, font de même allusion au nom d'Ammon.

  7 therefore, behold, I have stretched out my hand on you, and will deliver you for a spoil to the nations; and I will cut you off from the peoples, and I will cause you to perish out of the countries: I will destroy you; and you shall know that I am Yahweh.
  
  8 Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because Moab and Seir say, Behold, the house of Judah is like all the nations;
  
  9 therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kiriathaim,
  
  10 to the children of the east, [to go] against the children of Ammon; and I will give them for a possession, that the children of Ammon may not be remembered among the nations.
  
  Amos 1
  
  13 Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead, that they may enlarge their border.
  
  14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it will devour its palaces, with shouting in the day of battle, with a storm in the day of the whirlwind;
  
  15 and their king will go into captivity, he and his princes together," says Yahweh.

  8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the insults of the children of Ammon, with which they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border.
  
  9 Therefore as I live, says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, surely Moab will be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, a possession of nettles, and salt pits, and a perpetual desolation. The remnant of my people will plunder them, and the survivors of my nation will inherit them.
  
  10 This they will have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of Yahweh of Armies.
  
  11 Yahweh will be awesome to them, for he will famish all the gods of the land. Men will worship him, everyone from his place, even all the shores of the nations.
