Jérémie 50.1-64

La ruine de Babylone ; l’opposition divine à son égard. Ces faits servent d’encouragements à Israël. (Jérémie 51:1-58)

La chronologie de cette prophétie est assez particulière : de nombreux points sont dispersés et entrelacés dans le temps ; les mêmes évènements sont à la fois écoulés, et se produiront de nouveau !

Babylone abondait en trésors, cependant, ni ses fontaines, ni sa richesse ne pouvaient réellement la garder en sécurité. Sa destruction survint, alors qu’elle était bien loin de s’en douter.

Partout où nous sommes, dans les plus grandes profondeurs, comme dans les lieux les plus éloignés, nous devons garder à l’esprit l’existence et la présence du Seigneur, notre Dieu, aux temps des plus grandes craintes, comme des plus grandes espérances !

L’émotion qui émane de cette chute de la Babylone antique, est de la même nature que celle que l’on connaîtra lors de l’anéantissement de la « Babylone » du Nouveau Testament, citée en Apocalypse 18:9,19. La ruine de tous ceux qui soutiennent l'idolâtrie, l'infidélité, et la superstition, est en quelque sorte nécessaire, pour revivifier la véritable dévotion ; les menaces prophétiques des Saintes Écritures, convergent dans ce sens.

Cette Babylone antique, « siège » central de la tyrannie, de l'idolâtrie, de la superstition et des persécutions des véritables chrétiens, fut inévitablement condamnée à la destruction. Des multitudes allaient alors pleurer à cause de leurs péchés, et chercher le Seigneur. Les brebis perdues de la maison d'Israël ne seront plus errantes et isolées, mais se réfugieront de nouveau sous la houlette du bon Berger.

Que l'accomplissement intégral de ces anciennes prophéties puisse affermir notre foi, quant à la totalité des promesses et des prédictions à venir, citées dans les Saintes Écritures !

  16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him who handles the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn everyone to his people, and they shall flee everyone to his own land.
  
  21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: kill and utterly destroy after them, says Yahweh, and do according to all that I have commanded you.
  
  24 I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, Babylon, and you weren't aware: you are found, and also caught, because you have striven against Yahweh.
  
  29 Call together the archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow; encamp against her all around; let none of it escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she has done, do to her; for she has been proud against Yahweh, against the Holy One of Israel.
  
  33 Thus says Yahweh of Armies: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; and all who took them captive hold them fast; they refuse to let them go.

  1 Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against those who dwell in Lebkamai, a destroying wind.
