World English Bible Who is the wise man, that may understand this? Who is he to whom the mouth of Yahweh has spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land perished and burned up like a wilderness, so that none passes through?

Le peuple ne saurait répondre à cette question si simple sans se condamner lui-même. C'est pourquoi Dieu répond à sa place.

Il était habituel d'entendre en Sion, des paroles de joie et de louange, alors que le peuple gardait une certaine piété ; mais le péché changea cet état de choses : on pouvait désormais y percevoir des lamentations.

Les cœurs non repentants déplorent souvent les calamités qui les atteignent, mais ne mentionnent jamais leur péché, véritable cause de toutes leurs épreuves. Même si nos « portes spirituelles » sont fermées, la mort parvient à nous atteindre. Elle entre dans les palais des princes et des grands de ce monde, malgré leurs diverses protections, et leurs nombreux gardiens ! Ceux qui résident au loin, à l'étranger, ne sont pas épargnés pour autant ; la mort atteint même les enfants et les jeunes gens.

Prêtez l'oreille à la Parole de Dieu, et pleurez sur vos iniquités, en recherchant les voies de la piété : c'est le seul moyen d'obtenir un véritable réconfort spirituel ; le Seigneur peut transformer les afflictions les plus pénibles, en grâces merveilleuses !
