Il : il s'agit de Dieu, que Job n'ose pas nommer, ne voulant pas l'accuser expressément d'être l'auteur de ses maux, ce qui est cependant sa pensée. La même réticence se trouve plusieurs fois dans ses discours, depuis 3.20 : Pourquoi donne-t-il la lumière au malheureux ?

Il a délié sa corde : la corde par laquelle il tenait les méchants et les empêchait d'agir.
