Le terme hébreu el moul, que l'on traduit souvent par en face de, n'a pas proprement ce sens et signifie plutôt sur la face de, sur le devant ; comparez Exode 34.3, dont la traduction littérale est : sur le devant de la montagne, sur ses flancs, ; Josué 8.33 : sur le devant du mont Ebal... du mont Garizim ; Exode 26.9 : sur le devant de la Demeure. Le sens de en face de serait inadmissible dans ces trois passages et dans plusieurs autres. Il est question ici de la partie du pays de Canaan qui fait face à l'extérieur (c'est-à-dire vers l'orient, du côté du Jourdain). Du côté des fils d'Israël. Le terme hébreu el ever pourrait signifier au-delà (Deutéronome 30.13) ; mais que voudrait dire : au-delà des fils d'Israël ?
