C’était la quinzième année du règne de l’empereur Tibère. Ponce Pilate était alors gouverneur de la Judée, Hérode régnait sur la Galilée avec le titre de tétrarque, son frère Philippe sur l’Iturée et la Trachonite, Lysanias sur l’Abilène.

Hanne et Caïphe occupaient les fonctions de grands-prêtres. Cette année-là, Dieu appela, dans les endroits déserts où il se trouvait, Jean, fils de Zacharie, et lui confia son message.

Jean se mit à parcourir toute la région du Jourdain. Il prêchait et demandait aux gens de se faire baptiser pour indiquer qu’ils voulaient changer de vie, afin que Dieu pardonne leurs péchés.

Ainsi s’accomplit ce que le prophète Ésaïe a écrit dans son livre : On entend la voix de quelqu’un
qui crie dans le désert :
Préparez le chemin du Seigneur,
rectifiez les sentiers qu’il doit parcourir.

Tout ravin sera comblé,
toute montagne et toute colline seront aplanies,
les voies tortueuses redeviendront droites,
les chemins rocailleux seront nivelés,

et toute l’humanité verra l’œuvre de salut de Dieu. Jean disait à ceux qui venaient en foule se faire baptiser par lui : — Race de vipères ! Qui vous a fait croire (qu’en vous faisant baptiser) vous pourriez esquiver (le jugement) imminent de la colère (de Dieu) ?

Prouvez donc, par vos actes, que votre désir est sincère et que vous voulez réellement changer (de vie). Ne vous imaginez pas qu’il vous suffit de répéter : « Nous sommes les descendants d’Abraham ». En effet, regardez ces pierres, je vous déclare que Dieu pourrait en faire des enfants d’Abraham.

Attention ! (le temps est court). La hache est sur le point d’attaquer la racine des arbres : tout arbre qui ne porte pas de bons fruits va être coupé et jeté au feu.

Les gens lui demandèrent alors : — Que faut-il donc faire ?

Et lui de répondre : — Si quelqu’un a deux chemises, qu’il en donne une à celui qui n’en a pas. Si quelqu’un a de quoi manger, qu’il partage avec celui qui n’a rien.

Il y avait des collecteurs d’impôts qui venaient se faire baptiser. Ils demandèrent à Jean : — Maître, que devons-nous faire ? —

N’exigez rien au-delà des tarifs prescrits, leur répondit-il.

Des soldats le questionnèrent à leur tour : — Et nous, que devons-nous faire ? — Ne brimez personne et ne commettez pas de violences. Ne cherchez pas querelle aux gens. N’extorquez pas d’argent sous la menace. Contentez-vous de votre solde.

Le peuple était dans l’expectative et observait Jean. Chacun se demandait en secret si celui-là ne serait pas le Christ.

Pour répondre à ces questions, Jean leur fit cette déclaration publique : — Il est vrai que je vous baptise, mais ce n’est que dans l’eau. Quelqu’un va venir, quelqu’un de plus puissant que moi. Je ne mérite même pas de dénouer les lanières de ses sandales. Lui, il vous baptisera dans l’Esprit saint et le feu.

Il tient en main sa pelle à vanner, pour séparer le grain de la balle, il va nettoyer parfaitement son aire de battage, il amassera le blé dans son grenier. Quant à la balle, elle sera brûlée dans un feu qui ne s’éteindra jamais.

Par ces paroles sévères, par des recommandations nombreuses et variées, Jean secouait le peuple et lui annonçait la Bonne Nouvelle.

Il avait plusieurs fois blâmé Hérode, le gouverneur, parce qu’il avait épousé Hérodiade, la femme de son frère, et commis beaucoup d’autres méfaits.

Hérode combla la mesure de ses crimes en faisant emprisonner Jean.

Tout le peuple accourait vers Jean pour se faire baptiser. Jésus fut aussi baptisé. Or, pendant qu’il priait, le ciel s’ouvrit

et l’Esprit saint descendit sur lui en prenant l’apparence physique d’une colombe. Au même instant, une voix vint du ciel, disant : — Tu es mon Fils bien-aimé. Tu fais toute ma joie.

Jésus avait environ trente ans quand il commença à exercer son ministère. Il passait pour être le fils de Joseph, dont voici l’arbre généalogique : Joseph était fils d’Héli. Dans sa lignée nous trouvons, par ordre ascendant :

καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς πᾶσαν περίχωρον τοῦ Ἰορδάνου κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν,

ὡς γέγραπται ἐν βίβλῳ λόγων Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου· Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ· Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν κυρίου, εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ.

πᾶσα φάραγξ πληρωθήσεται καὶ πᾶν ὄρος καὶ βουνὸς ταπεινωθήσεται, καὶ ἔσται τὰ σκολιὰ εἰς εὐθείαν καὶ αἱ τραχεῖαι εἰς ὁδοὺς λείας·

καὶ ὄψεται πᾶσα σὰρξ τὸ σωτήριον τοῦ θεοῦ.
7
Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὄχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ· Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;

ποιήσατε οὖν καρποὺς ἀξίους τῆς μετανοίας· καὶ μὴ ἄρξησθε λέγειν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς· Πατέρα ἔχομεν τὸν Ἀβραάμ, λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι δύναται ὁ θεὸς ἐκ τῶν λίθων τούτων ἐγεῖραι τέκνα τῷ Ἀβραάμ.

ἤδη δὲ καὶ ἡ ἀξίνη πρὸς τὴν ῥίζαν τῶν δένδρων κεῖται· πᾶν οὖν δένδρον μὴ ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλὸν ἐκκόπτεται καὶ εἰς πῦρ βάλλεται.

Καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι λέγοντες· Τί οὖν ποιήσωμεν;
11
ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς· Ὁ ἔχων δύο χιτῶνας μεταδότω τῷ μὴ ἔχοντι, καὶ ὁ ἔχων βρώματα ὁμοίως ποιείτω.
12
ἦλθον δὲ καὶ τελῶναι βαπτισθῆναι καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν· Διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσωμεν;
13
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Μηδὲν πλέον παρὰ τὸ διατεταγμένον ὑμῖν πράσσετε.
14
ἐπηρώτων δὲ αὐτὸν καὶ στρατευόμενοι λέγοντες· Τί ποιήσωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς; καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Μηδένα διασείσητε μηδὲ συκοφαντήσητε, καὶ ἀρκεῖσθε τοῖς ὀψωνίοις ὑμῶν.

Προσδοκῶντος δὲ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ διαλογιζομένων πάντων ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν περὶ τοῦ Ἰωάννου, μήποτε αὐτὸς εἴη ὁ χριστός,
16
ἀπεκρίνατο λέγων πᾶσιν ὁ Ἰωάννης· Ἐγὼ μὲν ὕδατι βαπτίζω ὑμᾶς· ἔρχεται δὲ ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ· αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ πυρί·

οὗ τὸ πτύον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ διακαθᾶραι τὴν ἅλωνα αὐτοῦ καὶ συναγαγεῖν τὸν σῖτον εἰς τὴν ἀποθήκην αὐτοῦ, τὸ δὲ ἄχυρον κατακαύσει πυρὶ ἀσβέστῳ.

Πολλὰ μὲν οὖν καὶ ἕτερα παρακαλῶν εὐηγγελίζετο τὸν λαόν·

ὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης, ἐλεγχόμενος ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ περὶ Ἡρῳδιάδος τῆς γυναικὸς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν πονηρῶν ὁ Ἡρῴδης,

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3
He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.
4
As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.
5
Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth.
6
All flesh will see God's salvation.'"

He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and don't begin to say among yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father;' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!
9
Even now the axe also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire."

The multitudes asked him, "What then must we do?"
11
He answered them, "He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise."
12
Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what must we do?"
13
He said to them, "Collect no more than that which is appointed to you."
14
Soldiers also asked him, saying, "What about us? What must we do?" He said to them, "Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages."
15
As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
16
John answered them all, "I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire,
17
whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
18
Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,
19
but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,
20
added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

Now it happened, when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized, and was praying. The sky was opened,
22
and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying "You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased."

Et la version grecque elle-même rend assez fidèlement Le sens de l'hébreu, jusqu'aux dernières paroles, (verset 6) dans lesquelles se produit une divergence : tandis que l'hébreu dit : "et la gloire de l'Eternel sera révélée et toute chair la verra en même temps," les Septante traduisent ces derniers mots par ceux-ci : "et toute chair verra le salut de Dieu."
Notre évangéliste adopte cette paraphrase qui convenait à son but et qui n'est pas contraire d'ailleurs à l'idée du prophète. En effet, voir le salut de Dieu, dans les temps évangéliques, c'était voir sa gloire, c'est-à-dire la manifestation de ses perfections, de sa sainteté, de sa miséricorde. Il faut ajouter que ces paroles se trouvent effectivement dans un autre passage d'Esaïe, (Esaïe 52.10) en sorte que l'évangéliste était autorisé à les citer ici.
- Quant à son sens général, la prophétie emploie l'image des préparatifs qu'on faisait sur les chemins, en vue du passage d'un roi visitant solennellement ses Etats. Par cette image est décrit le changement qui doit s'opérer dans le cœur de l'homme déchu, pour que Dieu et sa sainte volonté puissent y régner : orgueilleux et hautain, il doit être abaissé par la repentance ; engagé dans les voies tortueuses de l'incrédulité ou du doute, ou de la superstition, il doit revenir au droit chemin de la vérité de Dieu, de la sincérité. Du reste, il faut éviter, dans l'interprétation et l'application de ces images, les subtilités où se perd quelquefois l'exégèse ou la prédication.
