10 à 16 Les reproches renfermés dans ce morceau s'expliquent par ce qui est raconté dans les livres d'Esdras (chapitre 10) et de Néhémie (chapitre 13), au sujet des mariages des Israélites avec les femmes idolâtres des pays avoisinants. Quant à la répudiation des femmes israélites, elle n'était sans doute qu'un moyen de faciliter ces mariages avec des païennes, auxquels inclinait le cœur charnel du peuple.

N'avons-nous pas un même père ? Malachie commence ici, comme dans 1.6, par poser une vérité d'ordre général. Ce père n'est ni Adam, ni Abraham, mais Dieu, dont Israël est la famille. Toute atteinte portée à l'intégrité et à la pureté de cette famille est une offense à la sainteté de Dieu et à la dignité du peuple lui-même, par conséquent une violation de l'alliance faite par Dieu avec les pères du peuple.

Pourquoi sommes-nous infidèles ?... Pourquoi répudier une femme juive et épouser une païenne ?

Les mauvaises pratiques sont le fruit de principes corrompus ; celui qui est hypocrite envers Dieu, le sera également envers ses semblables.

Dans la négligence, voire le mépris de l'alliance du mariage, institué par Dieu, les Juifs répudiaient les femmes de leur propre nation, pour se tourner vers des étrangères. Ces dernières leur rendirent, aux yeux de tous, la vie difficile, malgré, une apparence de tendresse.

Si tu es marié, songe à ton épouse, elle est la relation la plus proche que tu possèdes en ce monde. L’épouse doit être regardée, non comme une servante mais comme une compagne. Lors du mariage, un serment est établi devant Dieu : on ne doit pas prendre à la légère cet engagement.

L'homme et la femme, unis par les liens du mariage, doivent continuer à vivre ensemble, jusqu'à la fin de leur vie, dans l'amour et la paix du Seigneur. Dieu n'a-t-il pas créé Ève pour Adam ? Il aurait pu créer une autre « Ève ». Pourquoi n’a–t-Il pas fait ainsi ? C'est pour qu’uniquement leur postérité Le serve.

Les maris et les femmes doivent vivre dans la crainte de Dieu, afin que leur descendance vive également dans la piété. Le Dieu d'Israël hait la répudiation. Ceux qui veulent se garder du péché doivent veiller à leur cœur car c'est de là que naît tout péché.

Les hommes constateront que leur mauvaise conduite, au sein de leur famille, est le fruit de leur égoïsme, qui ne tient aucun compte du bien-être et du bonheur des autres ; en fait, ils ne se consacrent qu’à leurs passions et leurs fantasmes.

Dieu était las d'entendre Son peuple tenter de se justifier, alors qu’il ne pratiquait que la corruption. Ceux qui pensent que Dieu peut tolérer le péché se mystifient eux-mêmes. Les moqueurs répètent inlassablement : « Où est le Dieu de la justice ? » Ils seront interpelés plus tard, au jour du Jugement...
