16 à 18 En face de ce complot des infidèles en Israël, Malachie en signale un autre, celui des fidèles défenseurs de l'Eternel, qui s'entretiennent aussi entre eux de l'état présent des choses, mais dans un tout autre esprit. C'est le saint reste dont parlent les prophètes ; ils se détachent, avec pleine conscience de la masse incrédule à laquelle ils se sentent étrangers.

Se sont entretenus. Pour se fortifier mutuellement dans la foi au Dieu de l'alliance.

L'Eternel a été attentif. Comme il avait entendu les propos impies des révoltés, il recueille maintenant les pieux entretiens des fidèles. Bien plus, il discerne chacun d'eux en particulier.

Un livre a été écrit. Littéralement : Un livre de souvenir, un écrit servant de mémorial, pour garder leur nom à chacun. Cette image rappelle les livres de mémoires des rois de Perse, où étaient consignés les noms de ceux qui avaient rendu un service signalé, aux rois et à l'Etat (Esther 6.1 ; comparez Psaumes 56.9). Ce livre représente la toute science et la fidèle providence de Dieu.

Qui ont du respect. Le mot est celui qui est employé Genèse 15.5 ; il signifie imputer, tenir compte de ; le sens est donc : Ceux qui, dans leurs jugements et leurs résolutions, mettent avant tout en ligne de compte la connaissance que Dieu leur a donnée de lui-même dans sa révélation (son nom). Comparez la manière dont Jésus parle de ses brebis, Jean 10.3,27-29.
